10 Years of Rally to Read
New Chapters, edited by David Furlonger, is a celebration of tangible hope in South Africa – acknowledging the success of the first ten years of this inspiring
development project, Rally to Read.
This extraordinary and uniquely South African
story of caring, collaboration, hope and partnership has touched the lives of many different communities. This coffee-table book presents a beautifully illustrated off-
road journey through the diverse landscape of our countryside, focussing on the
personal delivery of book libraries and the provision of sustained teacher training to
our rural primary schools.
Extreme poverty and low literacy levels present the greatest challenge to primary education in these far-flung
areas. Motivated by these dire needs, South African private sector sponsors and their employees and families
have conducted rallies over the last ten years into some of the most remote regions of our country, using
hundreds of off-road vehicles, to deliver books and kick-start primary school literacy programmes, in the process reaching over 35,000 learners per annum.
As readers explore the evocative images and insightful words of this special publication, they begin to understand that Rally to Read is about things that move the human spirit – about giving, sharing, learning and discovering – for the good of all. The jubilation of the singing children, the tears and the laughter of the comparatively privileged rally participants, the dusty columns of 4x4’s and the majestic African landscape, combine to create a collage of deep and meaningful dimensions. Aside from the revealing copy and heartfelt quotes from learners and participants, the 180 full-colour photographs tell their own story.
